Nowruz: The Iranian New Year

Nowruz or ''New Day'' refers to a series of ancient traditions related to celebrating the great Iranian New Year, which is also known as the ''Persian New Year''. The festival starts from the first day of Farvardin Mah (the first month of the Iranian solar calendar) to the 13th day called ''Sizdah Be Dar'' or ''the Day of Nature''. The first day of the Iranian calendar coincides with the first day of spring, around March 21. Nowruz originated from pre-Zoroastrian and Zoroastrian theology, the state Iranian religion before Islam or exactly, the world's oldest continuously practised religion, dates back to at least second millennium BC. Despite its origin, it has been celebrated in many areas, such as India, the Caucasus, Central Asia, western Asia, the Black Sea Basin and the Balkans because of the influence of Iranian culture among other nations. Nowruz contributes friendship among different communities of people so that March 21 was inscribed by UNESCO under the title ''The International Day of Nowruz'' on Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity in 2016. Every year by starting Esfand Mah (the last month of the Iranian year), Iranians look forward to celebrating Nowruz. They do cleaning and shopping and buy new things especially new cloth and presents for Youngers. Fresh fruits of the season, sweets, candy and nuts are favourites by Iranians to host their guests properly

Nowruz history

To understand how much this part of the year is important for Iranians, you need to know some information about the history of Nowruz. The beginning of the new year was an important event for the Iranian agro-pastoralists society and it had a strong effect on their lifestyle was related to the agricultural economy. The end of winter and beginning of spring was the time of work for agro-pastoral societies, within the spring, they get ready to harvest their production and summer and then planting new products. The amount and quality of their products especially food depended largely on the fact that to what extent a suitable condition for farming provided for the next year. There is famous Iranian proverb said ‘’Nowruz is the key of the year’’ so it has been the best time to celebrate and thanks God

Since 3rd millennium BC, Nowruz has been celebrated in the Iranian plateau. At the time of Achaemenids (559- 531 BC) Nowruz was celebrated in form of an annual tradition everywhere but the royal centre of the festivals was Persepolis or Takht-e Jamshid palace in Fars. The complex was the ancient cultural capital of Achaemenids, the great Iranian emperors who ruled a great part of ancient world for twenty hundred years. There are very famous bas reliefs related to Nowruz and its symbols in Persepolis, one of this symbol is the battle of a lion (the new year) and ox (the old year) demonstrated the victory of the lion. In various locations of the palace, the nobles or servants also found while holding apples or round things like eggs in their hands. On the palace of Apadana, there are reliefs demonstrate the different nations who brought gifts to the Achaemenian great king

Nowruz ethics

Traditionally, before the arrival of Nowruz, the members of Family gather together around the haft-Sīn which spread on the table or the ground on special table linen called ''Softreh'' in Persian. The Haft-Sin refers to seven items begin with the letter Sīn (Persian: ‏س). The main Items include Sabze (the sprouts of wheat, barley or lentil grown in a dish), Samanu (a sweet pudding made from wheat germ), Senjed (Persian olive), Serke (Vinegar), Sib (Apple), Sir (Garlic) and Sumaq (Sumac). Each Item of Haft-Sin is a symbol of an ancient Zoroastrian holy sprits named Izadan (The Gods and Goddesses), the name of twelve Persian months derived from the name of these twelve sprits. For example, Sabze is the symbol of life and Ordibehesht (the second months of Persian calendar); Smanu is the symbol of grocery and Shahrivar (the sixth month); Senjed is the symbol of love and lovers Khordad (the third month); Somaq is the symbol of rain and Bahman (the eleventh month), Serkeh is the symbol of immortality and Mordad (the fifth month), Sib is the symbol of fertility and Esfand (the twelfth month), Sir is the symbol of worship and Mehr  the seventh month

Other items, such as mirror, candle, painted eggs, coins, goldfish, orange, the divān of Hafez, the Šāhnāme of Ferdowsi, and one the holy books as the Quran, Bible or Avesta found on the table too. At the moment of the transition to the New Year people pray and speak to God in order to ask for help, health and give thanks. A large diversity of folks and different community of religions hold Nowruz in high regard. During the Nowruz, people expected to make short visits to the family, friends and neighbours. Usually, young people visit their elders first, and then the elders return their visit. Because of the holidays, some people find New Year as the best time for travel and see new places, the touristic provinces and areas like Fars, Isfahan, Yazd, the northern area alongside the Caspian Sea and the Southern beaches of Persian Gulf are the most popular destination for tourists and travellers during Nowruz. As it said before, Nowruz holiday lasts thirteen days and the last day called Sizdah Be Dar. On this day, the Iranian families leave their houses towards natural attractions and spots like parks, gardens, green pastures, by the rivers, forests or simply their backyard gardens to have a lovely picnic, take food and eat it outdoors, play games in groups and spend a nice day with family and friends

Although, Nowruz is known as the Iranian New Year, but you don't have to be from Iran or specifically Persian to celebrate it because this universal festival belongs to every nation of the world. It is the beginning of spring, the season of rebirth and rejuvenation, so from every corner of the world you are, you can join the people who celebrate Nowruz as the universal festival of spring, light and happiness. Nowruz has been listed as one of the intangible cultural heritage due to its impact on global solidarity as well as one of the oldest human cultural celebrations that convey the message of friendship, peace, respect for nature and happiness

نوروز، سال نوی ایرانی

نوروز یا روز نو به مجموعه‌ای سنت‌های باستانی اطلاق می‌شود که در گرامی داشت سال نوی ایرانی که با عنوان «سال نوی پارسی» نیز از آن یاد شده، برگزار می‌گردد. این جشن‌ها از نخستین روز ماه فروردین (نخستین ماه تقویم ایرانی شمسی) آغازشده و تا 13 روز بعد که بدان سیزده به در یا روز طبیعت گفته می‌شود، به طول می‌انجامد. نخستین روز تقویم ایرانی خورشیدی با اولین روز بهار در حدود 21 مارس همزمان است. ریشه عید نوروز در دین زرتشتی و یا اعتقادات پیشا زرتشتی  قابل جست‌وجو است. دین زردشتی که دین رسمی ایرانیان پیش از اسلام بوده است قدیمی‌ترین دین جهانی است که از هزاره دوم پیش از میلاد تاکنون همچنان رواج خود را حفظ کرده است. باوجوداین ریشه زردشتی، عید نوروز در نواحی زیادی در جهان از قبیل هند، قفقاز، آسیای مرکزی، غرب آسیا، حوزه دریای سیاه و بالکان به سبب نفوذ فرهنگ ایرانی در میان سایر ملت‌ها جشن گرفته می‌شود. نوروز سبب همدلی میان گروه‌های انسانی بزرگی گشته است از این رو در سال 2016، 21 مارس ب عنوان «روز بین‌المللی نوروز» در فهرست آثار فرهنگی ناملموس یونسکو ثبت‌شده است. همه‌ساله با آغاز اسفندماه (آخرین ماه سال ایرانی)، ایرانیان به استقبال نوروز می‌روند. تمیزکاری و خرید کردن به‌ویژه لباس و کادو برای جوان‌ترها از رسومات این ایام است. میوه‌های فصل، شیرینی، آب‌نبات و آجیل ازجمله اقلام محبوب ایرانیان برای پذیرایی از مهمانان ایشان محسوب می‌شود.

تاریخچه نوروز

برای شناخت میزان اهمیت این بخش از سال برای ایرانیان لازم است تا اطلاعاتی در باره تاریخچه نوروز در دست داشته باشید. آغاز سال نو برای ایرانیان که در گذشته جامعه ای کشاورز-دامدار داشتند رویداد بسیار مهمی بوده و تاثیر بالایی بر سبک زندگی مرتبط با کشاورزی ایشان داشته است. پایان زمستان و آغاز بهار ایام شروع کار برای این جامعه کشاورز- دامدار بوده است که در طی بهار و تابستان به برداشت محصولات خود اقدام میکردند در حالی که در زمستان می بایست در پس کاشت محصولات جدید بر می امدند. مقدار و کیفیت تولید به ویژه غذا بستگی زیادی بر این حقیقت داشته که تا چه اندازه در سال جدید شرایط کشت و زرع مهیا است. یک ضرب المثل ایرانی وجود دارد که اشاره می کند:«سالی که نکوست از بهارش پیداست» از این رو این ایام بهترین موقع برای جشن و شکرگذاری خداوند بوده است. 

در هزاره سوم پیش از میلاد، نوروز توسط ساکنان فلات ایران جشن گرفته می شده است. در دوران هخامنشیان (559- 531 پ.م) نوروز به عنوان یک رویداد سنتی سالانه در همه جا گرامی داشته می شد اما مرکز سلطنتی این رویدادها  شهرپارسه یا تخت جمشید در فارس بود. مجموعه ی جهانی پرسپولیس به عنوان پایتخت فرهنگی هخامنشیان بوده که روزگاری بر بخش برزگی از جهان کهن فرمانروایی می کردند. تعدادی نقش برجسته سنگی مرتبط با نوروز و نمادهای ان در پرسپولیس دیده می شود، یکی از این نمادها صحنه نبرد شیر، نماد سال جدید و گاو نماد سال قدیم است که پیروزی نهایی شیر را به تصویر می کشد. در مکان های مختلف  کاخ صحنه رفت و آمد بزرگان  و خدمه تصویر شده در حالی که سیب یا جسمی گرد شبیه به تخم مرغ در دست دارند. در کاخ آپادانا، صحنه بارعام هدیه آورندگان از ملت های مختلف به نزد شاه بزرگ هخامنشی حکاکی شده است.

آیین های نوروز

ازلحاظ سنتی، پیش از فرارسیدن نوروز، اعضای خانواده بر سر سفره هفت‌سین گرد هم می‌آیند که معمولاً بر روی میز یا زمین گستره می‌شود. هفت‌سین اشاره به هفت‌قلم کالا دارد که نام آن‌ها با حرف سین آغاز می‌شود، این اقلام عبارت است از: سبزه، سمنو، سنجد، سرکه، سیب، سیر و سماق دارد. هر یک از عناصر سفره هفت سین نماد و نشانه یکی از ایزدان دوازده گانه دین زردشتی است که اسم خود را به دوازده ماه سال نیز داده اند. برای مثال سبزه نشانه سبزی، زندگی  و ماه دوم تقویم شمسی است، سمنو نشانه ی افتخار و شهریورماه یعنی ماه ششم این تقویم است. سایر موارد نیز همچون سنجد نشانه ی عشق، عشاق و ماه خرداد (سومین ماه)، سماق نشانه باران و بهمن (ماه یازدهم)، سرکه نشانه ی جاودانگی و مرداد (ماه پنجم)، سیب نشانه ی باروری و اسفند (ماه دوازدهم) و در نهایت سیر نشانه ی بندگی، عبادت و مهر (ماه هفتم) هستند.

 موارد دیگری همچون آیینه، شمع، تخم‌مرغ رنگی، سکه، ماهی قرمز، پرتقال، دیوان حافظ، شاهنامه فردوسی و یا یکی از کتب مقدس قران، انجیل یا اوستا نیز بر سر سفره گذاشته می‌شود. مردمان در لحظه تحویل سال با خواندن دعا از خداوند تقاضای کمک، سلامتی دارند و همچنین نعمت‌های وی را شکر می‌گویند. اقوام مختلف و گروه‌های دینی متفاوت نوروز را ارزش می‌نهند. در طی این ایام، افراد تمایل دارند تا با خانواده، دوستان و همسایه‌ها رسم عید دیدنی را به‌جا آورند. معمولاً کوچک‌ترها نخست به خانه بزرگ‌ترها می‌روند و سپس بزرگ‌ترها به‌اصطلاح اقدام به بازدید از آن‌ها می‌کنند. به سبب تعطیلات، برخی سال نو رو برای سفر غنیمت می شمرند، استان‌ها و نواحی توریستی ایران همچون فارس، اصفهان، یزد، سواحل شمالی در کنار دریای مازندران و جنوبی در جوار خلیج‌فارس از مقاصد محبوب توریستی محسوب می‌شوند. همچنان که در پیش‌گفته شد روز آخر نوروز سیزده به در نام دارد. در این روز ایرانیان خانه‌ها را به‌قصد اقامت کوتاه برای پیوستن به طبیعت به‌ویژه پارک، باغ، سبزه‌زارها، کنار رودها، جنگل‌ها و یا به‌سادگی حیاط پشتی خانه‌هایشان، ترک می‌کنند تا یک تفریح دوست‌داشتنی همراه با غذا و لذت انواع بازی‌های گروهی تجربه کنند. 

اگرچه نوروز به عنوان جشن سال نوی ایرانی شناخته می شود، اما نمی بایست لزوما ایرانی یا از قوم پارس باشید تا در این جشن شرکت کنید، از این رو که این عید جهانی متعلق به همه ی ملت ها است. نوروز مقارن با آغازبهار، فصل زندگی دوباره و جوانه زدن است بنابراین در هر گوشه زمین که زندگی می کنید می توانید خود را در این سلسله جشن های بهار، نور و شادی سهیم بدانید. نوروز به سبب تاثیری که بر همبستگی جهانی دارد و همچنین به عنوان یکی از کهن ترین جشن های فرهنگی انسان که پیام دوستی، صلح، احترام به طبیعت و شادی می دهد به عنوان یکی از آثار ماندگار انسانی ثبت شده است.
